Authors Collective: Carlee Witt

Hey! I’m Carlee Witt and I love writing! Ever since I was younger, I’ve had a passion to write. I always dreamed of writing a story and one day publishing my own novel. Right now, I’m in the process of publishing my very first! There is no feeling like completing and submitting a manuscript that you put so much work and thought and time into.

As an avid reader and aspiring author, I can usually be found reading a book in a corner somewhere, dreaming up ideas for another story, or ranting about The Hunger Games.

The Unknown

When you hear your name being called to the principal's office it doesn’t usually mean something good is about to happen. And for Sage Emerson, it really didn’t.

It meant her kidnapping.

Kidnapped by a government organization, thrown into military training, and shipped off to Russia. Sage navigates the sudden changes of her life alongside a few of her classmates, best friends, and brother. She makes new connections with people she never thought she would, falls in love with a boy she never thought she would, and does so many things she never thought she would. She faces many things- good and bad- and faces her fears. Especially her greatest fear.

Her fear of The Unknown.

Why I Write

Like I said earlier, writing has always been a passion of mine. My mom always said I had a real talent when it came to words. In my free time I would write poems and short stories simply because I got bored and a story came to my mind, already worked out and ready to be written on a piece of scrap paper. There’s just something about daydreaming a story, writing it down, editing it to make it better, and reading it to your family and hearing their encouraging remarks. My family has always been supportive of my dream and cheered me on no matter what. Thanks, fam! Y'all are the best!

I don’t know about you but I have read so many books that are good in theory (rounded characters, good plot, amazing worldbuilding, a strong antagonist, all the action you can dream of), but I’ve been left feeling uninterested, bored, and ambivalent towards the whole story. I'm always left asking: Why? Why did this happen? Why is it important? Why should I care? Odd isn’t it, you can have the most amazing storyline but if readers don’t care they aren’t going to be interested. Why? Well...

“NICKIE!” Megan roared before the door into Nicole’s office burst open, slamming into the wall and rattling. Nicole jolted, scrambling out of her sleeping bag, snapped wide awake now. She slapped a hand onto the top of her desk and pulled herself up enough to peer over it— “Nickie!” Megan snapped, hands gripping the same desk as she leaned on it and glared down at the other author. “AH!” Nicole yelped, flinching back and falling into the chair. The seat dropped her, unwilling to be involved,...

Authors brains are so helpfully… unhelpful sometimes. *huffs and proceeds to shove my article at you* Okay, so, let's start out with what started the decision which is what I'm gonna say in just a minute… well.. No, it’d be what I'm about to write in just a minute…— anyway, basically the thing that led to my consideration of the decision I mentioned above. Theme. Okay, theme is… theme is… alot. I’ve been struggling to wrap my brain around how it works and how to implement it ever since i...
