Author Collective: Jake Harrell

Hey Y'all! I'm Jake!

I am a fourteen—about to be fifteen—year old born and raised in Central Florida. I am currently enrolled as a dual-enrollment student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU).

I love learning anything, from pointless to useless things, I like learning. My favorite stories are The Hunger Games, Star Wars, Back to the Future, Wars of the Realm, and Transformers. When I am not at one of my desks learning, you will find me playing piano, acoustic or electric guitar, bass, recording my own music, writing, sketching, capturing photos, or RIPPING dirt on my YZ125 dirt bike. I have a passion for God that grew stronger after a camp in the spring of 2025 where I got baptized, and I hope to show it in all of my works, including my latest work Ashes of Earth.

I write for a few reasons—one being I have enough skill to make decent works, and to me, that is enough to make something that reflects God. My second reason is, I have stories that are constantly in my head that sometimes get so crowded it is pure chaos—and writing them down not only clears my head (for a little) but also give people stories to read! My final reason is, it is just fun! The author gets to make ANYTHING up! Like . . . who WOULDN’T want to do that? You also make great friends in the author community who will help you, and you can help them (AKA early reads).

Ashes of Earth

When peace is a lie, and justice is an illusion, what will you become to survive the truth?

Eighteen-year-old Aiden Horizon has always believed in the mission of STING—the elite agency that keeps order in the last standing city on Earth. Trained to lead, born into legacy, and surrounded by a loyal crew, he was ready to step into his future.

But everything changes after one mission... and a single bullet.

A gift from a friend, a whisper of rebellion, and a moment of silence become the spark that sets everything ablaze. Now Aiden is caught between loyalty and conscience, duty and truth. With shadows rising around him and secrets buried in the very system he serves, Aiden must decide: obey the legacy that raised him—or fight the truth that haunts him. Because the deeper he goes, the harder it is to tell who the real enemy is...

And some choices can’t be undone.

Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

I don’t know about you but I have read so many books that are good in theory (rounded characters, good plot, amazing worldbuilding, a strong antagonist, all the action you can dream of), but I’ve been left feeling uninterested, bored, and ambivalent towards the whole story. I'm always left asking: Why? Why did this happen? Why is it important? Why should I care? Odd isn’t it, you can have the most amazing storyline but if readers don’t care they aren’t going to be interested. Why? Well...

“NICKIE!” Megan roared before the door into Nicole’s office burst open, slamming into the wall and rattling. Nicole jolted, scrambling out of her sleeping bag, snapped wide awake now. She slapped a hand onto the top of her desk and pulled herself up enough to peer over it— “Nickie!” Megan snapped, hands gripping the same desk as she leaned on it and glared down at the other author. “AH!” Nicole yelped, flinching back and falling into the chair. The seat dropped her, unwilling to be involved,...

Authors brains are so helpfully… unhelpful sometimes. *huffs and proceeds to shove my article at you* Okay, so, let's start out with what started the decision which is what I'm gonna say in just a minute… well.. No, it’d be what I'm about to write in just a minute…— anyway, basically the thing that led to my consideration of the decision I mentioned above. Theme. Okay, theme is… theme is… alot. I’ve been struggling to wrap my brain around how it works and how to implement it ever since i...
