Authors Collective: Micah C Herbert

I am Micah C. Hebert, a seventeen year old author from California. I have been writing for over four years, and creating the Tales from Cunavid over the past two years. Fantasy and dystopian are my preferred genres to write and read. My favorite books are the Lord of the Rings, the Inheritance Cycle, the Hunger Games, and the Giver Quartet. Other than literature, I love musical theater and cinema. But above these things, I love the Lord Jesus Christ.

Why I Write:

I write because I believe writing is a gift from God, and I strive to use that gift in ways that glorify God. Stories have power, and it is my goal to write powerful stories that bring positive effects in the world. My stories tend to be dark without much levity, showing the depravity of mankind. But it is never without a purpose. Sometimes, I show evil in the purpose of telling a cautionary tale; sometimes it is to point out the evils of this world, even though my stories take place in another; but most often, it is to highlight goodness, which shines brightest in the dark. Some themes that my writings commonly tackle are the destructive qualities of division, the strength of a pure friendship, the inaccuracy of one’s worldly reputation, and that evil often makes itself appear beautiful or appealing.

Tales of Cunavid: Brothers in Spirit

In the world of Cunavid, the powerful magician, Umvarrin, has reigned in the realm of Melhog for thousands of years, fighting—with the sword and his cunning—to expand his empire and subdue every realm under his evil grasp. But a new threat emerges as Standi—a tall manlike people—begin to scourge the peaceful Human villages in the north. Hope for Cunavid’s future begins to fade.

Amidst the turmoil, two heroes arise. Caulfid Toldernia is a young Human man, orphaned as a child and forced to grow up alone in the wilderness. Viniarn Bideul is a farmer with an ideal life and family, a special bloodline, and skill with a blade. But when the two witness the injustice of evil, they take action, leaving their homes behind to battle the Standi barbarians and the forces of Umvarrin. Caulfid’s heroics begin winning him great renown among the kingdoms, while Viniarn is ignored by the men he rescues.

As Viniarn and Caulfid fight evil in their own ways—one for justice, the other for mercy—Umvarrin’s mysterious plan begins to unfold upon Cunavid, thickening the shadows of dread.

Can the two warriors begin to shake Umvarrin’s foundations? Or will they be conquered in body, heart, and mind? For, it is not the enemy in Melhog who is the deadliest of them all.

I don’t know about you but I have read so many books that are good in theory (rounded characters, good plot, amazing worldbuilding, a strong antagonist, all the action you can dream of), but I’ve been left feeling uninterested, bored, and ambivalent towards the whole story. I'm always left asking: Why? Why did this happen? Why is it important? Why should I care? Odd isn’t it, you can have the most amazing storyline but if readers don’t care they aren’t going to be interested. Why? Well...

“NICKIE!” Megan roared before the door into Nicole’s office burst open, slamming into the wall and rattling. Nicole jolted, scrambling out of her sleeping bag, snapped wide awake now. She slapped a hand onto the top of her desk and pulled herself up enough to peer over it— “Nickie!” Megan snapped, hands gripping the same desk as she leaned on it and glared down at the other author. “AH!” Nicole yelped, flinching back and falling into the chair. The seat dropped her, unwilling to be involved,...

Authors brains are so helpfully… unhelpful sometimes. *huffs and proceeds to shove my article at you* Okay, so, let's start out with what started the decision which is what I'm gonna say in just a minute… well.. No, it’d be what I'm about to write in just a minute…— anyway, basically the thing that led to my consideration of the decision I mentioned above. Theme. Okay, theme is… theme is… alot. I’ve been struggling to wrap my brain around how it works and how to implement it ever since i...
