The Authors Headquarters Episode 19: Further Adventures of Bob

Nicole sighed as she swung herself into the feast room. It had truly been such a shame the coffee authors got Bob back; she’d hoped to help them all break their addiction but— It’s difficult to help addicts when they outnumber you. She shook her head at the sight of the old machine sitting proudly on its table, now with duct tape securing it down the best duct tape could. A deterrent.

Nicole frowned further at the sight of the note left on the machine as it lured her closer to read its message:

“To Nicole,

Coffee rules. You should know this by now. Team Tea lost for a very good reason, Coffee simply is the better of the two. Also, we’re going to give Bob a crown for his bravery. If you steal him, that would now be equal to kidnapping the King of Coffee.

A kind warning,

the Coffee Drinkers.”

A crown? She glanced back to the machine and saw nothing. Was the duct tape holding the machine to the table the crown? There was a few strips of the tape that went from under the table over the machine’s boxy head and back under. It looks more like Bob was imprisoned then crowned. Nicole smiled and laughed silently at the idea, oh that will be perfect to tell the coffee drinkers—

“Brrr, br, br, brr!” a boy sputtered in mimicry of a trumpet. Oh no. Nicole glanced to the doorway and found Gil walking into the room playing a trumpet that was invisible. He stepped away from the doorway once inside and gestured to the hall. “We present thee, the Crown of Coffee, sire Bob!” Gil spoke in a faux accent that was—Scottish? Were Scottish people known for crowning anybody? Or even having coffee?

Megan marched inside with a cardboard crown in hand, on it was—did they seriously glue coffee beans onto the cardboard?!

“Megan, Gil, that’s going to rot!”

Megan frowned, and narrowed her eyes at Nicole. “SHHH! Nickie, this is a crowning! No speaking!”

“Wha—”

“Shhhh!” Gil enforced.

Nicole groaned and stepped away from the machine to allow Megan to fulfil the roll of placing the cardboard onto the top of the machine.

“And now he is the King of All Coffee Machines!” Megan announced, gesturing around like the mad woman she was.

“If we treat him well, he’ll be a wonderful ally in the robot uprising!” Gil added.

“Lorelai, the Queen of Coffee! Enter!” Megan waved a hand to the doorway. In walked the very author Megan summoned and she held her head high. Crowned with a similar, though more queenly, ‘coffee crown’ as she carried a rather hefty glass jar filled with more beans into the room. She stopped at Bob’s table side, spun around, waited for Megan to push a chair behind her, then plopped herself down.

Nicole tilted her head against a hand as her eyes flicked between the two. “This is ridiculous.”

“You’re one to talk, coffee machine kidnapper!” Megan hissed, crossing her arms and shaking her head. “You are a monster.”

“At least I’m not the one gluing coffee beans to cardboard to give it as a crown to a coffee machine,” Nicole grinned, crossing her arms as well.

Megan gasped. Gil took a step back towards the exit, he shook a flattened hand across his throat to tell Nicole to cut it out.

She did not. “And that crown is going to get moldy in like two weeks!”

“Coffee beans don’t expire,” Megan corrected. “So, actually, it won’t!”

“Wait, they don’t expire?”

“Nope. Just like normal beans.”

Nicole stood there, staring.

“Ha!” Megan proclaimed her victory.

“I’ll get you coffee people away from it one day!” Nicole argued as she walked past the two to prepare her lunch on the allergy free side of the room.

“That would simply be impossible-ness, Nickie,” Gil butted in, now that Megan was less likely to explode. “Coffee drinkers are loyal to coffee, and loyalty is not to be traded to the tricky tactics of a tea drinker.”

“Except for Lorelai’s,” Megan muttered, glaring at the girl she’d just proclaimed as Queen of Coffee. “But we shall forgive it this once as it was forced upon her. Right?”

Lorelai laughed and smiled, nodding. “Yes, it was! I would have liked being on Team Coffee much more!”

Megan smiled as she pinned up her latest snippet onto the board, unraveling the thin but lengthy paper to make sure the full text could be seen. It almost looked like a receipt, a receipt of torture! Megan laughed to herself with a scoffing breath and pulled a chair from the meeting table to the side of the board. She wasn’t just going to wait around for people to barge into her office, she wanted to see their faces! Faces get very twisty and distorted when they’re showing shock, or horror,...

“Nicole! Hurry!” Giana hissed, gesturing for the author to scurry into her office. Nicole glanced over. That wasn’t a good sign. Her eyes flicked down and up the halls. No Megan or Gil in sight— “Now!” Giana urged. Okay, no Megan or Gil that she could see. She rushed into the office and Giana shut the door behind her, locked it, and then Kylie shoved a chair under the handle. Kaitlin and Lorelai let out a breath from where they sat in what seemed to be a broken up circle in the back corner of...
