Megan smiled as she pinned up her latest snippet onto the board, unraveling the thin but lengthy paper to make sure the full text could be seen. It almost looked like a receipt, a receipt of torture! Megan laughed to herself with a scoffing breath and pulled a chair from the meeting table to the side of the board. She wasn’t just going to wait around for people to barge into her office, she wanted to see their faces! Faces get very twisty and distorted when they’re showing shock, or horror, or anger. Megan leaned back in the chair and waited— “Good morning!” Nicole cheered as she entered with a file like she did every morning. Unlike most of the procrastinators, Nickie was wise enough to normally have at least one sacrifice to make up for her mistake and sin of procrastination-ness about her novel. “Good morning, Nickie!” Megan smiled. “Did you see the snippet of Jaxton I wrote yesterday?” “Oh, you wrote a snippet of— Jaxton…” Nicole trailed off and squinted at Megan. “What did you do?” “You wanna see?” “I don’t—” “Read it!” Megan snarled. “Read it, read it, read it! You’ll like it!” Nicole flinched back, blinking and hugging her sacrifice closer. “M-hm, sureee,” she dragged out as she slowly turned her head to the board. Her eyes flicked over the torture receipt. Her eyes widened. Her jaw tensed. She blinked and her eyebrows twisted in discomfort. She whipped her head towards— “MEGAN!” Nickie screeched. “WHAT?!” Megan asked with a smile. “What did you do to my boy?!” “He listed it out right there—” “MEGAN!” “It’s not even my fault really,” Megan rambled on, “but look at how good he is doing!” “Well— Yeah he’s fighting it but— MEGAN!” “Not my fault! Not. My. fault!” She corrected pointing to Nicole, who shook her head and clicked her tongue. “I’m getting the others!” Nicole zipped out of the room with that. Megan only sighed and then smiled to herself. An even bigger audience! Soon, Gil, Giana, Kylie, and Kaitlin were pushed into the room by the curly haired insomniac who then went right around them and gestured to the board. “Look what she did!” Gil sighed. “I already saw her giggling and cackling yesterday. She also bragged about it to me, so I already know what she did.” “But look!” “She’s terrible I know—” Gil stopped when Megan’s eyes narrowed. He laughed and stepped back as he adjusted his hoodie collar. “Oh, hey Meg!” “Hi,” Megan replied in faux innocence, tilting her head. “What were you saying? That I’m wonderful and amazing? I know!” Gil laughed. “Yup. That, completely correct! Factually!” “Good!” Megan smiled with all her teeth. You better keep agreeing with me. The other three meanwhile read over the snippet. As expected there were more twisted, reformed-like-clay expressions. “Megan! Why did you have to do all of that to Jaxton!” Giana asked, putting a hand on the paper. “He did kinda deserve it.” “Maybe but— I bet you hurt Ky and Ciara too!” “I did!” Giana gasped. “Not Ky and Ciara!” “You just asked, you should know better than that by now!” Kylie, meanwhile, shook her head and crossed her arms. “Then you call me murderous.” “No one— No one has said that in a bit? As far as I am aware at least?” Nicole replied, glancing over the other. “Ha! Megan did!” Kylie laughed, glancing back. “YEAH! ‘Cause of what you’re doing in your next book!” Megan defended. “My hands are clean.” Kylie wiped her hands against each other—then murmured something with a grin. “Okay is no one hearing—” Nicole began. “Megaaaannn!” Kaitlin cried. “Why did you do this?! I feel bad for him now!” “That means I am writing good enough to invoke that!” Megan smiled. Nicole shook her head free of, what was hopefully, paranoias and looked back over to the current author on trial. “Megan, what if I made Fynn or Dorian get brainwashed?” Kylie, Gil, and Kylie gasped as they stared at Nicole. “I’ll squish all my more cherished cherries.” Megan grinned, un-gasping. “You wouldn’t dare!” Kylie exclaimed. “NOT MY FYNN AND DORIAN!” Kaitlin screamed. “ELF and WLD has just been attacked! Call the squad!” Gil cried, running around then pausing. “Wait. We’re all here. Well, at least mostly, tis good enough. ELF, WLD, we must do what we must! Megan, you have permission to scream even if you don’t really or ever need or would follow along with permissions.” “WAIT—” Nicole shouted, before the room exploded into berating. |

“Nicole! Hurry!” Giana hissed, gesturing for the author to scurry into her office. Nicole glanced over. That wasn’t a good sign. Her eyes flicked down and up the halls. No Megan or Gil in sight— “Now!” Giana urged. Okay, no Megan or Gil that she could see. She rushed into the office and Giana shut the door behind her, locked it, and then Kylie shoved a chair under the handle. Kaitlin and Lorelai let out a breath from where they sat in what seemed to be a broken up circle in the back corner of...

Nicole squinted, biting at the inside of her lips as she aligned the stick-on laminate over the bookmark-in-the-making. The drawing that was a translated version of one of the Collective’s book covers already sketched, colored, and shaded. She was not going to mess up now. She did not have time or the want to have to do this whole thing over. Art couldn’t be replicated perfectly in any volume or amount. She’d never be able to draw it the exact same way again! She took in a breath and pinned...
