The Authors Headquarters Episode 20: Photo Communication

Nicole yawned as she opened up her office door, there was supposed to be a sprint meeting soon and she needed to at least be there on time to watch the others do their share of writing and work sprints. Why did these meetings always have to be at 5 or 6 am though! She growled a little, hefting the laptop tucked against her side and under her arm further up so it didn’t slip out of her hand as she walked. Soon, having wound down enough of the halls to start approaching the meeting room where Gil and Megan sat beyond the half clouded, half clear glass box of a room. They were glaring each other down with grins.

Never a good thing. Nicole took a breath, if this was actually to scream at her over Do It For The Fame’s ending again— Well, she couldn’t do anything but continue to try and argue her way out of that accusation.

Kylie and Kaitlin exited the underground tunnel to the space before the meeting room, exchanged waves with Nicole, shut the floor back up, and entered the room. Nicole hurried to catch the door before slipping in herself.

“Good morning!” she called with a smile as she plopped down onto a chair away from the Irish twins, who had stacks of papers resting next to each of them.

“Good morning, Nicole! How are you?” Kaitlin asked. “Actually, more importantly how are Dorian, Fynn, Emeric, Paris— and I guess Daffodil too. OH! And any of your other characters as well, just in case.”

Nicole sighed. “Kaitlin, they’re how they should be.”

“Are they? So Rafael and Myra are dea—”

“KAITLIN!”

She huffed and crossed her arms, before muttering to her sister, who nodded in agreement as she twirled the sheathed knife around in her hand.

“Kylie,” Nicole spoke up. “Kylie, is that actually a pr—”

Gil snatched up a paper and with a flare shoved it in Megan’s face, showing an image of the Hamilton’s King George singing ‘You’ll be back’. The captions of the image clarified that. Megan grabbed a paper of her own and showed the Princess Bride image of a character talking about not messing around with some kind of person or something. Nicole was clueless to that movie, so—but—ait, where they just arguing with—

Gil picked up another meme of an image and shoved it toward Megan’s face. Then she did the same once more.

“What are they doing?” Nicole asked Kylie and Kaitlin, who both shrugged.

“Were you going to ask me somethi—” Kylie began only for Gil to turn to the three.

“Thanks for coming to the meeting!” he cheered. “Pardon me while I deal with Megan here—” He showed his sister another image.

Megan shook her head and did the same once more. The loop went on, it appeared.

Nicole blinked. “Are you two arguing with images?” she asked, slumping onto the table as a tired hand pointed to the papers.

“Yup!” Megan chirped. “And I am winning, HA!” She tossed out another image.

Nicole groaned and let her face fall onto the desk. “It’s too late for this.”

“Nicole it’s 6:15,” Kaitlin replied, leaning onto the table to try and look at the other’s face, but failing to as the other was too far and her face was shielded by matted hair, “in the morning.”

“I know. It’s too late.”

“Too early?”

“No. Late. It’s late, incredibly late—”

“Okay...” Kaitlin paused. “Nicole, did you not sleep again?”

She got no response other than Nicole’s hand slipping from her hair to the desk as the author seemed to pass out then and there.

Megan smiled as she pinned up her latest snippet onto the board, unraveling the thin but lengthy paper to make sure the full text could be seen. It almost looked like a receipt, a receipt of torture! Megan laughed to herself with a scoffing breath and pulled a chair from the meeting table to the side of the board. She wasn’t just going to wait around for people to barge into her office, she wanted to see their faces! Faces get very twisty and distorted when they’re showing shock, or horror,...

“Nicole! Hurry!” Giana hissed, gesturing for the author to scurry into her office. Nicole glanced over. That wasn’t a good sign. Her eyes flicked down and up the halls. No Megan or Gil in sight— “Now!” Giana urged. Okay, no Megan or Gil that she could see. She rushed into the office and Giana shut the door behind her, locked it, and then Kylie shoved a chair under the handle. Kaitlin and Lorelai let out a breath from where they sat in what seemed to be a broken up circle in the back corner of...
